This lovely book extends the uplifting sentiment of Psalm 118:24 by following a pair of siblings through their day, and framing the story with the Bible verse itself: 'This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.' A little brown-skinned girl and her brother (the boy narrates) look outside onto a yard alive with butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and bees. The rhyming text moves the reader with the children from inside to outside, with the trees and houses leaning toward one another in a reassuring way. Next is a trip to the zoo with their parents, followed by a visit to a farmer's market, a bountiful dinner of fruits and vegetables, prayer, a book, and bed. The centerpiece of the book, in which the children, visiting the zoo, gaze through glass at animals--predator and prey--standing next to each other, will remind many adult readers of the Eden-like Peaceable Kingdom paintings by American artist Edward Hicks. This is a beautiful book and talks about appreciating everything on this earth that the Lord has made. It definitely mentions God but the book doesn't come off as religious, just spiritual. There's nothing not to like about this book. It's wonderful and my girls love reading this book and looking at the beautifully illustrated pictures.
You can see, in these pages, Linsey Davis’s vision of a world alive with God’s grace, and how that vision found a perfect expression in the verses that the poet Joseph Bottum helped her craft. A wonderful Mere Christianity-like meeting of Davis’s Protestantism and Bottum’s Catholicism to produce something like Gerard Manley Hopkins for very young children.
I bought this after seeing the journalist and author interviewed by fellow journalists on Good Morning America. I usually don't buy book on an author's self promotion but the journalist's poise and intellect is one I admired so I bought it "blind". It's great; so insightful, soothing and just wonderful to view and read. Great buy!
I love this book! I have two young kids (a 4 year old son and 2 year daughter) who absolutely enjoys books like this where they are represented throughout the book. Thank you for such a well illustrated story that emphasizes the beauty of God’s creation.
This is a beautiful book. I saw the author on Home and Family this week. She said she wrote it after her son was born and realized children's books are few and far between that have children look like her son. I purchased this for my 3 and 5 yo granddaughters because they have friends that are black and the book is,about Psalm 118:24 i think. I will also get one for our kids room at church.
My daughter loves it! She will ask for the book by name and listen intently. Definitely worth the buy and the read.
I love everything about this book! Wonderful story and colorful illustrations - lots of color and animals - and very nice quality. The book encourages conversation with young ones about God and his creation. I purchased one for myself, one to give each of my younger grandkids, a couple extra for baby gifts, and I will probably purchase a few more!
Positively one of the sweetest books I’ve read in years! The artwork is beautiful and it is faith based, which is so refreshing these days! Buy it! You will be so happy to read it to all the children in your life!
